Upgrade to PrestaShop 9.2

PrestaShop 9.2 was released on 30 September 2026. It brings Ask AI, an assistant you talk to in plain language right inside your back office, plus a native one-page checkout. Whether you’re on 9.1, 8.x or still on 1.7, we get you there without breaking what already works.

PrestaShop 9.2 in plain words

What the update changes for your shop, explained without jargon, in five minutes.

Ask AI: talk to your store

Ask AI is a conversational assistant built into the PrestaShop 9.2 back office. You open it from the "Ask AI" button in the top bar on any back-office page, ask a question in your own words, and it answers from your real store data. It can also make changes for you - but only after you approve them.

Ask in your own words

"How many orders are pending shipment today?" "Which products are out of stock?" "Show me the orders placed by this customer." Ask AI reads your orders, products and customers and replies in the language you write in. On product, order and customer pages it also suggests questions for that page.

Nothing changes without your approval

Looking things up happens straight away. Anything that would change your store - creating a product, updating stock or prices, setting up a voucher - is shown to you first with Approve and Discard buttons.

Your AI provider, your key

You choose OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini) or Mistral AI and enter your own API key. Billing runs directly between you and that provider. Requests go from your server to your provider, not through PrestaShop's servers.

Connect the AI tools you already use

Ask AI runs on the PrestaShop MCP Server, which also lets ChatGPT (paid plans), Claude, Gemini, Le Chat, Cursor and other compatible tools work with your store. Each person you allow connects as a Viewer (read-only) or an Editor (read and write).

Ask AI comes with the Classic edition of PrestaShop 9.2 - the standard package you download from prestashop.com. It needs a PrestaShop Account, the webservice switched on and an API key before it does anything, and on a shop that is upgraded rather than freshly installed, its modules may need to be installed separately. As part of your upgrade we:

  • install and activate Ask AI and the MCP Server, and link your PrestaShop Account
  • connect the AI provider you choose and check that your key works
  • decide with you who may connect from outside tools, and with which role
  • test on staging what each action really does on your shop - for example whether an order status change sends the customer email your team expects - before anyone relies on it

One thing worth knowing: the store data an answer is built from is sent to the AI provider you pick, so choose one whose data terms suit your business. We are happy to talk this through with you.

What else PrestaShop 9.2 brings

9.2 builds on everything PrestaShop 9 introduced - Symfony 6.4 LTS, a modern back office, the new Admin API and the Hummingbird theme - and adds features your customers and your team will notice:

Native one-page checkout

Address, delivery and payment on a single screen, without page reloads. A guest only needs an email address to start, and you can switch between one-page and four-page checkout at any time under Design > Checkout. It works out of the box with Hummingbird-based themes; other themes need their templates adapted. The module is still at an early version, so we switch it on for your live shop only after your payment and shipping modules pass on staging.

Custom fields without code

Extra Properties lets you add your own fields to products, combinations, categories, customers and orders from Advanced Parameters > Extra Properties. They appear in back-office forms, can be filtered and sorted in lists, and are available to your theme and the Admin API. PrestaShop marks the feature as experimental in 9.2, so we advise you on where it is safe to rely on it.

Supported and patched

9.2 runs on PHP 8.1 to 8.5 and Symfony 6.4 LTS, which has security support until November 2027. It includes the security fixes from 9.1.5, and it is the 9.x branch that will keep receiving them. PrestaShop 1.7 has had no maintenance since June 2025, and 8.2 now only gets security and critical fixes.

Better data for search engines

Structured data (JSON-LD) is now generated by PrestaShop itself, including your product features and your shop's contact details. URL keywords for brands and other pages can be translated per language, pagination hreflang tags are fixed, and attachments get readable URLs. Add PrestaShop 9's native WebP and AVIF images and cleaner product URLs.

Hummingbird 2.1 & accessibility

New 9.2 installs use Hummingbird 2.1, with further accessibility fixes for the European Accessibility Act, a checkout address step without nested forms, clickable store phone and email, and a sticky account menu. The Classic theme still ships, and an upgraded shop keeps its current theme until you decide otherwise.

A faster back office, fewer ghost carts

The orders list loads faster and a slow Carts page has been fixed. 16 more bots and AI crawlers are recognised, so they no longer create empty carts in your statistics. For each image type you can now choose whether thumbnails fit, crop or keep their proportions. We measure your shop before and after, so you see real numbers rather than a promise.

Also in 9.2: the Admin API now covers carriers, tax rules and your extra properties, which makes ERP and warehouse integrations simpler; the Classic edition bundles PrestaShop Automation with Klaviyo for email and SMS campaigns (a Klaviyo account is required); and products can be listed as open box, damaged or new with defects.

Can your server handle PrestaShop 9.2?

PrestaShop 9.2 needs PHP 8.1 to 8.5, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.2 or newer, and PrestaShop recommends a memory limit of at least 512 MB. PHP 8.1 itself stopped receiving security fixes at the end of 2025, so we recommend a newer PHP branch. We check all of this in the audit, before any work is quoted or started.

When we choose itWhenever the hosting environment supports it - which is most of the time.Only when your server genuinely cannot run PHP 8.1+ and moving host is not an option right now.

If your server cannot run PHP 8.1 yet, we do not force the issue. We will either help you move to hosting that can, or upgrade you to PrestaShop 8.2 as an interim step and plan the move to 9.2 for later. Either way you leave an unsupported version behind - which is the part that actually matters for your security and your rankings.

Why it isn't a one-click update

From 9.0 or 9.1, moving to 9.2 is a minor update. From 8.x or 1.7 it is a major one: the back office was rewritten for Symfony 6.4, so modules that override legacy admin controllers stop working, and some front-office hooks were removed. The Update Assistant also uninstalls modules it considers incompatible and regenerates email templates by default. A heavily customised shop is not going to survive a blind one-click update - so we do not run one.

How we upgrade your store

No blind one-click updates. Every step happens on a copy of your shop first.

  1. 01

    Preliminary Audit and Consultation

We inventory your current installation: PrestaShop version, PHP and MySQL versions on the server, your theme, every module, every override and every third-party integration. This tells us which route to 9.2 fits your shop, and what it will cost.

  2. 02

    Backup and Security Measures

Before anything changes, we take complete backups of your files and database, and verify that they restore. A backup nobody has tested is not a backup. This is your rollback path for the entire project.

  3. 03

    Module, Theme and Override Compatibility

Every module is checked against PrestaShop 9.2 before the Update Assistant gets a chance to switch it off. We flag those with an official 9.2 release, those that need adapting, and those that are abandoned and need replacing - including whether your payment and shipping modules work with the one-page checkout. You get that list with costs before we proceed.

  4. 04

    Server and PHP Readiness

We confirm your hosting can run a supported PHP version between 8.1 and 8.5 with the required extensions, enough memory and a suitable MySQL or MariaDB version. If it cannot, we tell you straight away and lay out the options: change host, or take the 8.2 route for now.

  5. 05

    Staging Environment Upgrade and Testing

The upgrade runs first on a full staging copy of your shop using Update Assistant 7.6.6, the first version with full 9.2 support, including its CLI for repeatable runs. Your custom email templates are kept. We then test the paths that earn you money: search, filters, cart, every payment method, every carrier, invoices, emails and the order workflow end to end.

  6. 06

    Theme and Checkout Decisions

Your existing theme can often be adapted, while Hummingbird 2.1 brings accessibility gains and the one-page checkout out of the box. We show you both options with honest effort estimates so the decision is yours, not one we make silently on your behalf.

  7. 07

Ask AI and New Features Set Up

We install and connect Ask AI with the provider you choose, set who may connect from outside AI tools, and test its actions on staging. The redesigned back-office pages that 9.2 brings arrive switched off on upgraded shops; we turn on the ones that are ready for your setup.

  8. 08

Go Live, SEO Safeguards and Support

We deploy during off-peak hours, keep URLs stable and put redirects in place wherever they change, so your rankings survive the move. After launch we monitor logs and performance, fix what surfaces, and walk your team through what is new in the back office, Ask AI included.

“We’ve been working with prestachamps for over a few years, they are really reliable and useful, hope to continue the upgrades soon and over in the future!”

Your route to 9.2, and how long it takes

It depends almost entirely on where you are starting from and how customised your shop is. These are realistic ranges, not sales figures - your audit gives you the exact number.

  1. From PrestaShop 9.0 or 9.1

A direct update with the Update Assistant. Usually the shortest project of all: most of the time goes into testing your modules and setting up Ask AI and the new features.

  2. From PrestaShop 8.x

PHP 8.1 is the only version both 8.x and 9.2 run on, so the PHP change is planned into the job. A standard shop without exotic modules is often a matter of days including full testing.

  3. From PrestaShop 1.7

1.7 and 9.2 share no PHP version, so the route goes through 8.2, or through a fresh 9.2 installation with your data migrated - the approach PrestaShop recommends for major jumps. A module-heavy 1.7 store typically needs one to two weeks.

  4. From PrestaShop 1.6

Coming from 1.6 usually means a data migration and a theme rebuild, which puts the project in the two to six week range.
